In 2011, Grupo Niche performed at the Feria de Cali, one of Colombia’s largest cultural events, in the city regarded as the world capital of salsa. Founded in 1978 by Jairo Varela, the group shaped an elegant, danceable Colombian salsa carried by blazing horns, spirited choruses and lyrics rooted in caleña life. This live capture conveys the energy of a full big band before an enthralled crowd, running through the classics that made the ensemble’s international name, such as “Cali Pachanguero”, the city’s anthem. The rhythm section — congas, timbales, bongos, piano and bass — lays down a relentless groove over which the singers’ and soloists’ improvisations unfold. A Latin-music institution, Grupo Niche remains a reference for understanding the rise of salsa in Colombia and its spread across the continent. A full concert ideal for salsa enthusiasts, to be seen as a filmed live concert to grasp the popular fervour of a night at the Feria de Cali.
