Why this recording

Before this concert under her own name, H.E.R. had already appeared at the Tiny Desk earlier that year as a guest of Daniel Caesar, and NPR invited her back as the headliner. According to the station's write-up, she moves here from acoustic to electric guitar, then to Fender Rhodes. The clearest landmark is in “Focus”, from 12:32: halfway through the song, the instruments drop out and background singers Ajanee Hambrick and Malik Spence take over in harmony.

A filmed live concert by H.E.R. for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk series, recorded at the radio’s Washington D.C. headquarters on 8 November 2018. Gabriella Wilson, revealed under this alias, delivers a roughly twenty-minute set drawn from her I Used to Know Her EP series, in the intimate, acoustic format that made the Tiny Desk famous. Alternating between vocals and guitar, backed by singers and a band, she runs through Going (Interlude), Feel a Way, Hard Place and Focus. This live concert showcases her soul and R&B tone, her sense of nuance and her guitar playing, in a deliberately stripped-back setting that exposes the performance without artifice. The capture, praised by the music press, illustrates the rise of an artist since become a leading figure in contemporary R&B. A reference live session for fans of soul and neo-soul, this document captures H.E.R. in 2018, at the pivotal moment of her critical recognition, in one of the web’s most iconic live formats.
