On 28 October 2016, the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York hosted Untamed Elegance, a filmed live concert by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. The evening was built around a suite composed and arranged by saxophonist Victor Goines, a veteran orchestra member, paying tribute to the Jazz Age — the American Roaring Twenties, marked by prohibition and the genre’s global rise. Each piece explores a facet of the 1920s ethos and the jazz idiom, from big-band swing to more muted colours. A seventeen-piece big band, the JLCO unfolds the arranging craft, chiseled solos and ensemble cohesion that built its worldwide reputation. The capture highlights the richness of the brass and reed sections, along with Wynton Marsalis’s precise direction. A reference full concert for the orchestral-jazz enthusiast, to be seen as a filmed live concert to grasp the vitality of the big-band tradition in the 21st century.
