Why this recording

For its first fully digital edition, the Bruselas Flamenco Festival split its music programme between Esteban Murillo, Antonio Paz and Karim Baggili, alongside a film and a dance workshop. BOZAR announced a full band around the guitarist: Karoline de la Serna on vocals, Youri Nanai on bass, Silvano Macaluso on keyboards, Vivian Ladrière and Etienne Serck on drums and percussion. The venue's notes describe music that crosses flamenco with rock, groove and electro. The film went online on 26 March 2021, the day streaming opened, with support from the Spanish Embassy and the Instituto Cervantes.

Filmed live concert of Karim Baggili at BOZAR in Brussels, as part of the Bruselas Flamenco Festival 2021, an edition that went digital. A Belgian guitarist and oud player of Jordanian and Yugoslav descent, Baggili develops a singular string music at the crossroads of flamenco, world music and Mediterranean improvisation. This live capture highlights his virtuoso playing, between flamenco rhythms, Eastern melodies and deeply emotional original compositions. The filmed concert, recorded in the setting of the Brussels fine-arts palace, conveys the intimacy of a performance without showiness, centred on the musician’s harmonic richness and sensitivity. An ideal discovery for lovers of guitar and expanded flamenco at the edge of genres, carried by one of the most original string artists on the Belgian scene. The Bruselas Flamenco Festival, held each year at the Brussels fine-arts palace, celebrates flamenco culture in all its forms. In 2021, forced into a digital format, it gave rise to carefully produced captures such as this one. This filmed concert illustrates the fertile porosity between flamenco, Mediterranean music and contemporary creation, embodied in Karim Baggili’s singular journey.
