Why this recording

AVROTROS Klassiek posted this concert three days after it was recorded on Easter Sunday morning 2018, as part of the Sunday Morning Concert series. The broadcaster's text describes the “Great Mass” as the first in which Mozart fully let go. The cast features two sopranos, Sophie Harmsen and Lenneke Ruiten, alongside Attilio Glaser and Morgan Pearse. Over 57 minutes, the video follows the Mass in the state Mozart left it: twelve sections, from the Kyrie to the Benedictus, with the Credo stopping after “Et incarnatus est”.

Live concert filmed on Easter Sunday, 1 April 2018, in the main hall of Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw for the Sunday Morning Concert. The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Choir perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor, K. 427, an unfinished yet monumental work written in 1782-1783, in which the composer gives free rein to a sacred, theatrical ambition. Under the baton of Markus Stenz, soloists Sophie Harmsen and Lenneke Ruiten (sopranos), Attilio Glaser (tenor) and Morgan Pearse (bass) unfold the score’s great pages, from the solemn « Kyrie » to the virtuosic « Laudamus te » and the crystalline « Et incarnatus est ». The HD capture, served by the Concertgebouw’s legendary acoustics, conveys the choral and orchestral richness of this luxuriant mass. This filmed live performance is a reference for discovering sacred Mozart in one of the world’s finest halls, carried by a leading radio orchestra and choir, in a broad, luminous and deeply inhabited interpretation.
