Ron Carter Foursight Quartet — Jazz San Javier, 2019

Why this recording

The July 21, 2019 concert at the Auditorio Parque Almansa in San Javier was released by Ron Carter himself in February 2022, almost three years later, in a 90-minute version. Setlist.fm lists seven pieces mixing originals and standards: “595” as the opener, then “Flamenco Strikes”, “Caminando” and “Saguaro”. Standards get a measured share, with “My Funny Valentine” in third position and “You and the Night and the Music” closing the set.

The most recorded bassist in jazz history, Ron Carter presents his Foursight Quartet at the Jazz San Javier 2019 festival, in the Murcia region, in a live concert filmed and shared by the artist’s official channel. A former cornerstone of Miles Davis’s second great quintet, Carter, well into his eighties, displays undiminished elegance: a woody tone, deep swing and a mastery of accompaniment that shaped the vocabulary of the modern double bass. Joined by Donald Vega on piano, Jimmy Greene on saxophone and Peyton Crossley on drums, he offers refined, conversational and deeply melodic jazz. The full concert highlights the mutual listening and subtle interplay of a well-drilled quartet, between reworked standards and original compositions. For fans of live jazz, acoustic jazz and open-air festivals, this live concert is an exceptional moment with a living legend, filmed in the warm setting of Jazz San Javier, one of Spain’s major jazz gatherings.
