Live full concert of trumpeter Roy Hargrove at the North Sea Jazz Festival 1995, in the Jan Steen hall of the Nederlands Congresgebouw in The Hague, then the festival’s historic home. A leader of American jazz’s “young lions” generation, Hargrove is only around twenty-five and fresh off his albums “With the Tenors of Our Time” (1994) and “Family” (1995). Billed as “Inner Circles,” this set reveals a musician with a warm tone and finely chiselled articulation, moving between incandescent hard bop and ballads of great tenderness. Long before his RH Factor fusion project and his Grammy-winning work with D’Angelo, you can feel the energy of a virtuoso soloist and a generous bandleader. A precious document of an artist who died in 2018, well worth rediscovering for the vitality of its swing and the elegance of its phrasing.
