Live capture of Australian trio Silverchair at the Pinkpop festival in Landgraaf, the Netherlands, in 1997. Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar), Chris Joannou (bass) and Ben Gillies (drums) hit the stage at the height of the grunge wave, barely out of their teens yet already riding the success of the album Frogstomp and its follow-up Freakshow. This filmed full concert documents a pivotal moment in 1990s rock: raw energy, saturated riffs and Johns’s ragged voice, often compared to Kurt Cobain’s but already shaped by the distinctive songwriting that would steer the band toward a more ambitious rock sound. Formed in Newcastle in 1992, Silverchair became one of the leading names of the Australian alternative scene before splitting in 2011. The Pinkpop live set restores the tension of a festival performance played for a won-over European crowd. An essential rock document for understanding the meteoric rise of a band formed by three high-schoolers who became, for the span of one 1997 summer, one of the most talked-about acts in global rock.
