Terror/Cactus — Live on KEXP, Seattle, 2019

Why this recording

Recorded on November 26, 2019 in the KEXP studio, the session belongs to Immigrant Songs, the station's series devoted to immigrant musicians. Buenos Aires-born, Seattle-based Martín Selasco plays here as a duo with local percussionist David French, whereas Terror/Cactus usually performs solo or with a rotating cast. The four pieces draw largely on the Corriente EP released that same year. KEXP followed the performance with an interview in which Selasco discussed his path as an immigrant musician.

Live session filmed in the KEXP radio studio in Seattle on 26 November 2019. Led by producer Martín Selasco, Terror/Cactus explores a swaying Latin American electronic sound, where cumbia, chicha and Andean rhythms meet synths, dub and electronic textures. For this capture, the ensemble performs four songs — « Sapo Enamorado », « La Quebrada », « Tambor del Monte » and « La Corriente » — carried by tropical grooves, round basslines and a mixed instrumentation. The KEXP format highlights the richness of the sonic palette and the danceable dimension of this music, at the crossroads of Latin cultures and the North American electronic scene. Made possible with support from the Vilcek Foundation, this live capture illustrates the vitality of immigrant music in the United States. This filmed live performance offers an ideal introduction to modern electronic cumbia in 2019, warm and inventive, championed by a reference radio that has made musical diversity and in-studio live capture its trademark.
