Full concert film of Tinariwen, the Tuareg (ishumar) collective from the Kidal region of northern Mali, recorded on April 4, 2017 at the KEXP radio studios in Seattle. This live session captures the band during the touring cycle for Elwan (2017), an album shaped by exile and the group’s long displacement from the Saharan homeland. As founders of desert blues, Tinariwen weave hypnotic electric guitars, rolling bass lines, hand percussion and Tamasheq vocals carried by weathered lead voices and call-and-response choruses. Shot in KEXP’s studio with a clean, understated sound, the performance reveals the circular interplay of the guitars, the indigo robes, and the slow trance that defines their music. This full performance features four songs: “Talyat Girl,” “Assàwt (The Voice of Tamashek Women),” “Sastanàqqàm (I Question You),” and “Nànnuflày (Fulfilled).” It stands as a valuable live document of one of the most emblematic groups in Tuareg music, blending the poetry of wandering with minimalist electricity. A representative snapshot of world music and Saharan desert blues brought to American airwaves.
