Filmed at the Nuits de Fourvière festival in Lyon in 2025 and broadcast by ARTE Concert, this live concert presents Tinariwen, a Tuareg collective from the Sahara desert in northern Mali. A pioneer of what is called “desert blues,” the group has combined since the 1980s hypnotic electric guitars, singing in Tamasheq and insistent rhythms inherited from nomadic culture. On the ancient stage of Fourvière, the musicians unfold long trances in which circular riffs and choirs answer the percussion, in music that is both meditative and deeply propulsive. Shaped by a history marked by exile and commitment, Tinariwen’s work has won a global audience and a Grammy Award, bringing Saharan traditions into dialogue with a rock aesthetic. The ARTE recording conveys the beauty of the venue and the peaceful intensity of this repertoire. For lovers of world music, this roughly 70-minute full concert is an ideal immersion into the world of one of the most singular groups on the international scene, between blues, trance and desert memory.
Tinariwen — Nuits de Fourvière, Lyon, 2025
Why this recording
ARTE Concert caught up with Tinariwen on June 7, 2025 at the Roman theatre of Fourvière, nine years after filming them at the Inrocks Festival in 2016, as the channel points out. In between, the band released Elwan, Amadjar, Amatssou and the outtakes collection Idrache, so the video catches the collective at the end of that run of records. The show was part of the festival's “African Grooves” night, shared with Les Amazones d'Afrique. Nearly an hour and a quarter in HD, from a channel that has followed the band at two points in its career.
