Why this recording

Tito Nieves played the Festival Viva la Salsa at the Jockey Club del Perú on 14 September 2019, and this video, billed as the complete concert, runs about fifty minutes. It comes from Gerson Salsa Producciones, an audiovisual outfit devoted to salsa that shoots live performances and music videos. Filmed in HD and posted in July 2020, it documents one of the Peruvian stops on the salsa circuit, shot by a crew from within the genre rather than from the crowd.

Full concert by Tito Nieves at the Viva la Salsa Festival, in Lima, Peru, in 2019. A Puerto Rican singer raised in New York, Tito Nieves is a major figure of salsa, nicknamed “El Pavarotti de la Salsa” for the power and warmth of his voice. A player on the New York salsa scene since the 1980s, he popularised a style at once romantic and festive, singing in both Spanish and English. This filmed live concert shows him before a won-over Peruvian audience, within a festival devoted to the genre, carried by a full orchestra of brass, pianos, Afro-Caribbean percussion and backing vocals. Between salsa boleros, danceable numbers and classics from his repertoire, the performance illustrates the vitality of salsa in Latin America and the fervour it inspires in concert. The capture conveys the collective energy of a dance night and the stage generosity of an artist seasoned in the craft. A full concert ideal for fans of salsa, Latin music and Afro-Caribbean sonorities, to savour for the richness of its arrangements and the warm atmosphere of a major gathering of the genre.
