Recorded at NPR headquarters in Washington in 2018, this Tiny Desk Concert by British multi-instrumentalist Tom Misch is a live performance that puts his guitar playing front and center alongside his sense of groove. A SoundCloud discovery of the mid-2010s, the Londoner arrives with his band and runs through three songs: “It Runs Through Me,” “I Wish” and “Movie.” The stripped-down Tiny Desk format reveals how his repertoire is built, with guitar as the foundation of tracks designed for a live audience, and where a hip-hop and soul lineage — the acknowledged influence of J Dilla in particular — meets a jazz sensibility. That jazz feel comes through most clearly in the exchanges between Misch and saxophonist Braxton Cook. On stage, Tom Misch (guitar/vocals) is joined by Tobias Tripp (guitar, violin, vocals), James Creswick (bass), Jamie Houghton (drums) and Joseph Price (keys).
