2CELLOS — Sydney Opera House, 2016

On 4 December 2016, the duo 2CELLOS performed in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House for a full concert that became one of their reference captures. The Croatian cellists Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser, first known for their viral covers, showcase their crossover craft here: two cellos alone, spanning classical film-score repertoire and rock reworkings. The live performance opens with a run of cinematic themes — « Love Theme from The Godfather », « Cinema Paradiso », « Schindler’s List », « My Heart Will Go On », « Now We Are Free » and a « Game of Thrones » medley — before shifting to a more electric second half with « Smooth Criminal », « Thunderstruck », « Smells Like Teen Spirit », several AC/DC classics and « With or Without You ». The professional capture highlights the acoustics of the famous Australian opera house and the duo’s physical, expressive playing, moving from lyrical restraint to near-rock energy. It is a complete live show representative of the 2CELLOS approach, setting classical music, film soundtracks and popular culture in dialogue — an ideal introduction to the cello in a spectacular, accessible light.
