Why this recording

Abby O'Neill, who produced the session for NPR, frames this visit against a Jamaican scene then dominated by dancehall, with Chronixx carrying the roots revival to a younger generation. The three songs come from Chronology, described as his second album, and are played by seven musicians: two guitars, keys, bass, drums and percussion around the singer. NPR credits Josh Rogosin as audio engineer and Bob Boilen as creative director. Posted a week after the station's article, the video runs under a quarter of an hour.

In September 2017, Jamaican singer Chronixx settled behind NPR’s famous desk for a filmed Tiny Desk Concert, the intimate format that has become a cult favourite. A figurehead of the roots reggae revival, Jamar McNaughton, alias Chronixx, presents his album « Chronology » accompanied by his band Zincfence Redemption. In the hushed setting of the radio offices, the group performs three songs — « Skankin’ Sweet », « Majesty » and « Spanish Town Rocking » — with the warmth and precision of a deeply rooted reggae, between off-beat guitars, round bass and melodic space. Far from the power of a big festival PA, this live recording reveals the finesse of the arrangements and the sincerity of an artist carrying the Jamaican heritage high for a new generation. The filmed concert illustrates the strength of the Tiny Desk format, where closeness lays bare the musicians’ raw talent. A reference for lovers of reggae, acoustic live sessions and filmed concerts, to savour for the enveloping warmth and positive energy of a human-scale performance, carried by a soulful voice.
