Filmed live on 20 August 2026 at the Weseler Werft on the banks of the Main in Frankfurt, this concert is the Europa Open Air, a free open-air event staged with the European Central Bank. It brings together the hr-Sinfonieorchester (Frankfurt Radio Symphony) under its chief conductor Alain Altinoglu. Built for a large audience gathered by the river, the programme strings together vivid, rhythmically driven orchestral showpieces: Berlioz’s Marche hongroise, Chabrier’s España, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio italien, three excerpts from Grieg’s Peer Gynt and Gershwin’s An American in Paris. French accordionist and composer Richard Galliano appears as guest soloist, performing his own Opale Concerto alongside Piazzolla’s Libertango and Oblivion. This full concert captures the purpose of the Europa Open Air: carrying the great symphonic repertoire out of the concert hall and in front of thousands of listeners. Between orchestral virtuosity and Mediterranean and South American colours, the Frankfurt evening offers an accessible live concert designed as much for attentive listening as for a popular celebration on the riverbank, filmed and streamed for audiences well beyond the crowd on site.
