Mitski — Live on KEXP, 2017

Why this recording

In early April 2017, less than a year after Puberty 2, Mitski stopped by the KEXP studio; the video only went online six weeks later, on 18 May. The running order puts “Your Best American Girl” second to last, after “Francis Forever”, and closes on “Happy”. Three camera operators share the shoot, Jim Beckmann, Alaia D'Alessandro and Scott Holpainen, who also edited it. At just over nineteen minutes, the video covers the full session rather than an excerpt.

Filmed live session by Mitski in the KEXP radio studio in Seattle, recorded on 8 April 2017. An American singer-songwriter, Mitski had by then emerged as one of the most distinctive voices in indie rock, notably after the album Puberty 2 (2016) and the song “Your Best American Girl”. This KEXP session, a multi-song live format known for the quality of its capture, presents her in an intimate configuration. The live concert runs through four songs: “I Bet on Losing Dogs”, “Francis Forever”, “Your Best American Girl” and “Happy”. Between pop tension and raw guitars, Mitski unfolds an intimate writing on identity, desire and displacement, carried by a restrained yet magnetic stage presence. Captured by the KEXP team (host: Morgan; audio engineer: Kevin Suggs), this filmed live performance illustrates the talent of an artist who has since become a reference of the independent scene. Year: 2017. Part of KEXP’s celebrated series of in-studio live performances, this full multi-song session can be watched online in HD.
