Mitski — Full Performance (Live on KEXP), Seattle, 2018

Why this recording

Recorded on Halloween 2018, the session was only released by KEXP in January 2019, nearly three months later. The Seattle station credits its whole team: Jim Beckmann directing, three camera operators including Scott Holpainen, who also edited, Kevin Suggs on audio and Troy Nelson hosting. The format fits four songs into under twenty minutes, from “Geyser” to “Two Slow Dancers”, which closes the session. The video places Mitski in the year of Be the Cowboy, in a studio rather than on stage.

Live filmed session of Mitski at Seattle radio station KEXP, recorded on 31 October 2018. The American singer-songwriter presents songs from Be the Cowboy, the album released that same year that confirmed her as one of the defining indie-rock voices of her generation. In KEXP’s stripped-back, demanding format — multi-camera capture, meticulous sound, no gimmicks — Mitski performs “Geyser,” “Why Didn’t You Stop Me?,” “Nobody” and “Two Slow Dancers,” with a stage presence at once restrained and magnetic. This live filmed concert highlights the precise writing and emotional intensity that define her work, carried by spare arrangements that leave all the room to her voice. A benchmark session for discovering Mitski live in 2018, at a pivotal moment in her career, in one of the most respected formats on the independent music scene.
