Why this recording

All four songs played on 14 July 2016 come from Puberty 2, and the session closes with “A Burning Hill”, which also ends the record. Recorded in midsummer, the video was only released in January 2017, nearly six months later. Cheryl Waters hosts; Kevin Suggs handles audio, and Alaia D'Alessandro, on cameras with Jim Beckmann and Scott Holpainen, also edits. “Your Best American Girl” comes second, without waiting for the end of the set.

Filmed live at the KEXP studios in Seattle on July 14, 2016, this performance captures Mitski on the rise, weeks after the release of the album Puberty 2. Alone on vocals and bass, the American singer-songwriter delivers four songs — Once More to See You, Your Best American Girl, My Body’s Made of Crushed Little Stars and A Burning Hill — moving between introspective pop, emotional tension and abrasive guitars. Aired by KEXP, a leading public radio for in-studio live sessions, the recording highlights the artist’s bare voice and stage intensity. Your Best American Girl, one of her most discussed tracks, gains particular power here. This filmed live concert documents a pivotal moment in Mitski’s career, before her international recognition. A concise full concert, four songs performed live in a stripped-down format that puts the songwriting front and center, this KEXP session remains a striking testament to 2010s American independent pop and to a live performer of rare intensity.
