Nils Frahm — Soirée de Poche (La Blogothèque), 2012

Why this recording

The piano is not his own: it belongs to the hosts of the Paris apartment where La Blogothèque set up its Soirée de Poche #25, and the team's account recalls Nils Frahm saying it had “character” and fearing he might break it. Directed by Benoit Toulemonde, the session used five camera operators and three sound recordists, followed by a mix from François Clos and mastering by Etienne Pozzo. Such a crew for twenty-five minutes of music in a living room shows how seriously the series took a household piano, treating it as a concert instrument.

An intimate live capture by La Blogothèque, this Soirée de Poche #25 features German composer and pianist Nils Frahm, filmed in a Parisian apartment. A major figure of the neo-classical scene and contemporary ambient, Frahm blurs the lines between classical music, electronics and minimalism. At the piano, he unfolds playing full of nuance, between hushed pianissimos, resonances and tiny sonic details captured right up against the instrument. The Soirées de Poche format, far from large halls, perfectly matches his aesthetic of close listening: you hear the piano’s mechanism, the musician’s breath, the very material of the sound. This performance, caught in the early 2010s as his reputation was spreading well beyond experimental circles, illustrates the rare sensibility of an artist who reconciled a wide audience with contemporary piano. A precious filmed concert for discovering Nils Frahm’s intimate neo-classicism in a setting of great tenderness.
