Richie Spice — Reggae Geel Festival, 2019

Filmed live concert by Jamaican singer Richie Spice at the Reggae Geel Festival in Belgium in August 2019. A major voice in contemporary roots reggae, Richie Spice carries a conscious, spiritual message in the lineage of the great Rasta singers. Before the crowd of Europe’s oldest reggae festival, he runs through his classics — “Earth a Run Red,” “Black Woman,” “Brown Skin,” “Righteous Youths” and “Groovin My Girl” — over deep, hypnotic riddims. His composed presence, restrained phrasing and warm melodies make this set a unifying moment, between the gravity of its social themes and the sweetness of its love songs. A perfect capture for feeling the communal energy of festival reggae and discovering an essential artist of the 2000s–2010s Jamaican scene.
