Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 — Moods, Zurich, 2019

Why this recording

Egypt 80 plays alone for twelve minutes before Seun Kuti walks on: that is the main cue in Rowan Standish Hayes's note published with the video, and a chance to hear Fela's former band without its leader, led by polyrhythmic drums, percussion and funk guitars. The same note says Seun also plays saxophone and sets the wisdom of African ancestors against the Christian message. Qwest TV bills the evening as an "Afrobeat Night". The concert is also part of the Moods club's video-on-demand offer.

Live concert film of Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 at the Moods club in Zurich, captured on 11 June 2019 during an “Afrobeat Night.” The youngest son of Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti leads Egypt 80, his father’s historic orchestra, which he took over after Fela’s death. This full concert of more than two hours opens, as is his custom, with a Fela song — here “Mr. Follow Follow” — as an act of homage, before moving into Seun’s own repertoire. Biting horns, hypnotic grooves, call-and-response vocals and saxophone solos: Afrobeat unfurls its full political charge and trance-like power, in the direct lineage of the Lagos sound. Produced by Qwest TV, the recording showcases the density of a large ensemble and the leader’s stage charisma. This live document is an ideal gateway into contemporary Afrobeat and West African music on stage. Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Moods, Zurich, 2019, a complete concert to watch in full.
