Spirit of Praise 7 — Carnival City, Johannesburg, 2018

Why this recording

The first of three parts released for Spirit of Praise 7, this 55-minute segment comes from Carnival City, the venue where the collective recorded volumes 5 to 8 between 2014 and 2022. Each song is handed to a different soloist or guest group, the multi-voice format that defines the series. The description gives timecodes for every track: founding member Benjamin Dube only steps in at the close, at 48:47, on "Lonile Ibandla". The upload, in November 2021, came three years after the volume's release.

Live gospel concert by Spirit of Praise (Volume 7, Part 1), captured at Carnival City in Johannesburg, in 2018. An iconic South African contemporary gospel collective, Spirit of Praise brings together some of the country’s finest voices around praise sung in English, Zulu and Sotho. This first part strings together nine songs carried by renowned guests — Tshepang, Women in Praise, the Dube Brothers, Nothando, Dumi Mkokstad, Omega Khunou, Neyi Zimu and Benjamin Dube — between powerful choruses, vocal harmonies and spiritual fervour. The capture conveys the intensity of a night of worship before a communing crowd, driven by a full live band and rich arrangements. This full concert illustrates the vitality of South African gospel and its ability to blend choral tradition and stage energy. A live concert film perfect for discovering, in 2018, Spirit of Praise at Carnival City, Johannesburg.
