Susto Stringband — Sugarshack Sessions

Why this recording

Susto Stringband grew out of 2022 jam sessions between Justin Osborne, frontman of the Charleston indie band Susto, and Holler Choir, an Appalachian string band from Asheville. The idea is to reread Osborne's songs through traditional instrumentation: clawhammer banjo, fiddle, upright bass. Across nine songs in under half an hour, the session opens with “Gloryland” and runs through “Acid Boys”, “E-350” and “Homeboy”. The crew is fully credited: Eddie Kopp directs and edits, six camera operators shoot, and three engineers from Sugarshack Recording Studio handle the audio.

Full live session of the band Susto Stringband recorded for the Sugarshack Sessions, the well-known live-capture series based in Bonita Springs, Florida. This filmed full set presents an acoustic string band rooted in the folk and Americana tradition: string instruments, multi-part singing and a performance captured live, without studio artifice. Faithful to the stripped-back, warm aesthetic of the Sugarshack Sessions, the musicians gather around the microphone to run through their compositions and a few covers, in a format that highlights ensemble playing, spontaneity and the sincerity of acoustic folk. The recording, made with the series’ signature visual and sonic care, conveys the intimacy of a performance played entirely live. An ideal document for lovers of folk, Americana, bluegrass and filmed live sessions, illustrating the vitality of the independent American acoustic scene. An authentic moment far from big productions, where emotion arises from the simplicity of the setup and the quality of the playing, preserved here in full.
