Full concert captured live from Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles, filmed on 25 October 2017 at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Germany, during the opening night of the 48th Deutsches Jazzfestival Frankfurt. A virtuoso keyboardist who rose to fame with Snarky Puppy and a master of the Hammond B3 organ and synthesizer, Cory Henry leads his funk outfit The Funk Apostles here, carrying into 2017 the energy of his album The Revival. This live concert film documents a high-voltage set in which funk, soul and gospel merge with jazz, driven by heavy rhythm sections, gospel-tinged backing vocals and extended keyboard improvisation. The sold-out opening evening, played to an unusually young festival crowd, followed a first half in which Henry performed with the hr-Bigband. The video showcases Henry’s explosive playing, his overdriven organ solos and the ecstatic stage communion typical of his shows from this era. A representative full concert of the New York keyboardist’s groove and virtuosity at his peak on the mid-2010s funk scene.
