Incognito — Jazz à Vienne Festival, 2023

Why this recording

On Qwest TV, Quincy Jones's video network, this Jazz à Vienne 2023 set comes with a note by Vincent Caffiaux that places Incognito within the history of Gilles Peterson's Talking Loud label, alongside Galliano and Urban Species. The same note offers two listening cues: an opener built on a French-language refrain, followed by a song carried by Natalie Duncan's voice. The closing number is singled out as the vocal high point of the show. At just under an hour, the video fits the shape of a festival slot at the Roman theatre.

Live concert film of Incognito at the Jazz à Vienne festival, recorded in 2023 on the stage of the Roman Théâtre antique in Vienne, France, and released by Qwest TV. Formed in London around Jean-Paul « Bluey » Maunick, Incognito is one of the flagship bands of acid jazz that emerged at the turn of the 1980s-90s, alongside the Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai. This full concert showcases the collective’s DNA: funk grooves, a razor-sharp brass section, soul arrangements and prominent female vocals, notably from Natalie Duncan. Set in Vienne’s Gallo-Roman theatre, one of European jazz’s finest venues, the London outfit delivers a set honed by decades of touring, alternating original compositions with pop-tinged hooks. This live recording, produced for Qwest TV, documents Incognito’s undiminished vitality more than thirty years after its debut. A live concert film ideal for discovering British acid jazz and the stage energy of a cult band of the genre.
