A full live concert by saxophonist Maceo Parker at the North Sea Jazz Festival on 11 July 1992 in The Hague, from the festival’s official archive. A former cornerstone of James Brown’s band — it was to him that the Godfather of Soul launched his famous « Maceo, I want you to blow! » — Parker embodies the legacy of 1960s–70s funk all by himself. On stage he blends funk, soul and jazz into an irresistible groove, driven by tight horn riffs and a sense of rhythm inherited from the JB’s school. « 2 % jazz, 98 % funky stuff »: his motto sums up a danceable, generous and deeply infectious set. This high-definition filmed live performance documents one of the world’s most influential funk saxophonists in the early 1990s, the period of his breakthrough as a bandleader. An essential full concert for fans of funk, soul-jazz and groovy horns. Filmed live concert, jazz festival, 1990s funk.
