On 28 September 1991, Metallica performed at the Monsters of Rock festival on Tushino Airfield in Moscow. This filmed concert features the band’s classic line-up: James Hetfield (vocals, rhythm guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) and Jason Newsted (bass). Staged only weeks after the failed August 1991 coup, the open-air event drew a crowd estimated at well over a million people, ranking among the largest audiences the band has ever played for. This live set captures Metallica shortly after the release of the Black Album, drawing on Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, …And Justice for All and Metallica. The full concert documents the raw power of an outdoor show in front of a Soviet audience discovering American thrash metal during a pivotal moment in history. As a live concert filmed in Moscow in 1991, it remains a key document for understanding Metallica’s international reach in the early 1990s and the cultural weight heavy metal carried at the close of the Cold War.
