Sepultura — Pinkpop, 1996

Why this recording

On May 27, 1996, Sepultura played Pinkpop in the middle of the Tribalism Across the World tour, with a set weighted toward Roots: “Roots Bloody Roots” opens, and “Ratamahatta” segued into “Kaiowas” closes the main set. The band also works in “Arise” linked to “Dead Embryonic Cells” and “Refuse/Resist”, then returns for Motörhead's “Orgasmatron”. Posted by the festival's archive channel, the 45-minute tape shows the final year of the Kisser, Cavalera, Cavalera, Pinto line-up, which the description calls the band's classic formation.

Simon Janvier, live-sound professional and editor of the catalogue

Full concert by Sepultura at the 1996 Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf, the Netherlands, from the festival’s official archive. Formed in 1984 in Belo Horizonte, the Brazilian thrash and groove metal band was then at the height of its international fame: this live recording captures the Roots era, the commercial peak of the group led by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. Filmed on the Dutch stage, the performance conveys the raw energy and tribal rhythms that made Sepultura distinctive, blending thrash aggression with Brazilian percussive influences. This 1996 document carries particular historical weight: it comes shortly before the departure of Max Cavalera, singer and founder, who left to start Soulfly. For metal fans, this live filmed full concert is a valuable record of one of the decade’s most influential bands, caught at its peak before the crowd of a major European festival. An essential archive piece of 1990s metal history.
