Why this recording
On 31 December 1978 the Blues Brothers opened for the Grateful Dead on Winterland's closing night, an evening simulcast by KSAN radio and KQED television. The set, uploaded by an individual, is presented as complete and unedited. “I Can't Turn You Loose” bookends it, as opener and outro, and the encore runs “Flip Flop and Fly” into “Jailhouse Rock”. In between, “Soul Man” and “Rubber Biscuit” draw on Briefcase Full of Blues, the live album released that same year, played here with two drummers, Steve Jordan and Willie Hall.

Born from a Saturday Night Live sketch, Jake and Elwood Blues — Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi — surrounded themselves with one of the finest soul and R&B rhythm sections of the era, featuring musicians from Stax and Booker T. & the M.G.’s. The result is a soul, rhythm and blues and funk revue of wild energy, with blazing horns, relentless groove and stage humor.
