Bonobo — KEXP, 2022
Why this recording
In spring 2022, Simon Green turns up at the KEXP studio on bass and synthesizer, part of a seven-piece line-up with horns, guitar and drums. Vocals are split between two guests: Jordan Rakei on "Shadows", Nicole Miglis on "From You" and "Surface". Recorded on 22 March and released on 6 April, the session is hosted by Cheryl Waters; Tommy Williams handles the mix, four camera operators shoot it and Jim Beckmann edits.
Simon Janvier, live-sound professional and editor of the catalogue
Recorded on March 22, 2022 in the KEXP studio in Seattle, this Full Performance presents Bonobo, the project of British producer and multi-instrumentalist Simon Green, in an expanded live lineup. Shortly after the release of the album Fragments (2022), the collective performs four songs filmed live — Counterpart, Shadows, From You and Surface — with guest vocals from Jordan Rakei (Shadows) and Nicole Miglis (From You, Surface). Bonobo unfolds his signature here: warm, organic electronica, refined downtempo blending samples, strings, horns and finely chiseled rhythms, embodied on stage by a real band (bass, drums, keys, guitar, horns). KEXP’s audience-free, direct-to-tape format reveals the richness of the arrangements and the human dimension of music often perceived as purely studio-bound. This filmed live concert is an excellent introduction to Bonobo’s electro world in 2022, between club music and contemplative listening, in a high-grade audio and video capture. Filmed in Seattle, it ranks among Bonobo’s essential live videos to watch online.
