Why this recording

At KEXP on 26 April 2018, the Texas trio plays in the studio with host Cheryl Waters. The four songs, from opener “Maria También” to closer “Evan Finds The Third Room”, all come from Con Todo el Mundo, released that same year. The station credits two audio engineers, Tim Iseler and Kevin Suggs, three camera operators and an editor, Justin Wilmore. Twenty-five minutes in the Seattle station's house format, posted in HD two months after the recording.

Recorded on April 26, 2018 in the KEXP studio in Seattle, this Full Performance presents Khruangbin, the Texan trio that became a cult favorite for its blend of psychedelic funk, soul and global influences. Shortly before the release of their album Con Todo el Mundo (2018), Laura Lee (bass), Mark Speer (guitar) and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums) run through four songs filmed live: Maria También, August 10, Lady and Man and Evan Finds The Third Room. Here is their hypnotic, minimalist groove, the airy guitar lines drawn from Thai surf music, dub and soul, and the quiet alchemy of a trio of rare complicity. KEXP’s audience-free, direct-to-tape format showcases the space and restraint that are the band’s very signature. This filmed live concert is an ideal gateway into Khruangbin’s funky, cosmopolitan world in 2018, to watch online and enjoy one of the trio’s most emblematic captures. Filmed in Seattle without an audience, this full performance remains a landmark among Khruangbin live videos.
