La Macanita — Sons d’Hiver Festival, Paris, 2004

Filmed live concert by La Macanita at the Sons d’Hiver festival, in the Paris region, in 2004. Tomasa Guerrero Carrasco, known as La Macanita, born in Jerez de la Frontera in 1968, is one of the great voices of contemporary flamenco, heir to cantaoras such as La Paquera, Fernanda de Utrera and La Perla de Cádiz. Revealed as a child on the programme “Rito y geografía del cante”, she stands out for her inimitable eco in soleá and her brilliance in bulerías, the signature palo of Jerez. This capture documents a cante jondo recital given in France, accompanied on flamenco guitar, in the purest tradition of Jerez flamenco. The concert showcases the power and emotion of a major performer, far from modern arrangements, in service of the cante and the compás. A precious live document for lovers of authentic flamenco, offering a rare glimpse of a reference cantaora on a Paris stage in the early 2000s.
