Maxwell — Tiny Desk Concert, 2024

Live session by Maxwell recorded in 2024 for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, at the American public radio headquarters in Washington D.C. A founding figure of the 1990s neo-soul movement, the New York singer revisits his repertoire here in the intimate, acoustic format of the Tiny Desk, behind the famous record-cluttered desk. Backed by his musicians, Maxwell unfurls his silky falsetto and his sense of hushed groove across several songs, in a closeness that highlights the quality of the writing and the finesse of the arrangements. Far from big productions, this capture reveals the purely vocal and musical dimension of a major contemporary soul artist, in dialogue with a small audience. An ideal document for grasping Maxwell’s stage elegance and the vitality of neo-soul in the 2020s, this filmed live concert stands as a reference of the Tiny Desk format. Filed under soul, it will delight lovers of exceptional voices and refined R&B. Savour it in full.
