Filmed live session by American bassist and double bassist Stanley Clarke for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk, recorded in 2025 as part of Black Music Month. A pioneer of jazz fusion, co-founder of Return to Forever alongside Chick Corea and named an NEA Jazz Master in 2022, Clarke marks a half-century of solo work behind NPR’s fabled desk, wall of amps included. He presents his ensemble 4EVER — a nod to Return to Forever — gathered around young musicians: Cameron Graves on piano, Colin Cook on guitar, Emilio Modeste on saxophone, Evan Garr on violin and Jeremiah Collier on drums. The live set draws on his foundational 1970s albums, from Song to John (Journey to Love, 1975) to the essential School Days, by way of the electric 1, 2, to the Bass. A display of virtuosity on acoustic and electric basses, this capture is a lesson in groove and in passing the torch for any fan of jazz and bass.
