Celia Cruz & Oscar D’León — North Sea Jazz Festival, 2000

Why this recording

The North Sea Jazz Festival's official archive put this show online in 2025, a quarter of a century after it took place in the Statenhal of The Hague's Congress Centre, dated Saturday 15 July 2000 in the description. At 1 hr 16 min, this is a full concert rather than a highlights reel, so a festival salsa set can be followed from start to finish. Opposite Celia Cruz, Oscar D'León handles both lead vocals and bass. The Queen of Salsa would die three years later, in July 2003.

Simon Janvier, live-sound professional and editor of the catalogue

Capture of a salsa set bringing together Celia Cruz and Oscar D’León at the North Sea Jazz Festival, then held at the Congresgebouw in The Hague (Netherlands), on the night of 14-15 July 2000. This filmed live concert unites two Latin-music legends: Cuba’s Celia Cruz, the « queen of salsa » with her inimitable voice and her historic cry of « ¡Azúcar! », and Venezuela’s Oscar D’León, the singer and bassist nicknamed « el Sonero del Mundo ». Together they carry a repertoire of danceable, festive salsa, with blazing horns and fiery montunos, before a won-over crowd. The song « Cucala » is among the identified titles of this performance. A rare summit meeting between two giants of the genre, this capture is a valuable document of live salsa at the dawn of the 2000s, a few years before Celia Cruz’s passing. An essential Latin full concert for salsa lovers.
