D’Angelo & The Soultronics — Montreux Jazz Festival, 2000

Live capture of D’Angelo and his band The Soultronics at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Auditorium Stravinski, on 14 July 2000, during the legendary tour for the album « Voodoo ». A founding figure of neo-soul, D’Angelo unfolds an organic, sensual groove rooted in Marvin Gaye, Prince and Sly Stone, singing and playing Fender Rhodes. This live filmed concert — a partial recording of the era — gathers « Brown Sugar », « Lady » and an extended reading of « Shit, Damn, Motherfucker ». Around him stands an exceptional collective: saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart, trumpeter Russell Gunn, backing vocalists Anthony Hamilton and Shelby Johnson, and bassist Pino Palladino, a pillar of the « Voodoo » sound. Having passed away in 2025, D’Angelo leaves an immense mark on contemporary soul; this Montreux document restores its warmth and rhythmic depth. For lovers of soul and organic R&B, a rare and precious reference live concert.
