Nile Rodgers & CHIC — Tiny Desk Concert (NPR), 2023

Why this recording

Thirty minutes at the Tiny Desk, directed and edited by Maia Stern with Josh Rogosin as audio engineer, and six songs that sum up Nile Rodgers' career as writer and producer, from CHIC to Daft Punk and David Bowie. Sheldon Pearce's text, published with the video, gives the markers: the sax solo that lifts “I'm Coming Out” and the breakdown in the middle of “We Are Family”. Then comes Rodgers' impromptu detour into “Rapper's Delight” over the bassline of “Good Times”, the song that hip-hop classic samples.

Simon Janvier, live-sound professional and editor of the catalogue

Live filmed session by Nile Rodgers & CHIC for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts, recorded in October 2023 at Bob Boilen’s desk in Washington, D.C. One of the most influential guitarists, producers and songwriters in the history of popular music, Nile Rodgers runs through a condensed set of his vast funk and disco catalogue with CHIC: “Le Freak”, “I’m Coming Out” (written for Diana Ross), “We Are Family” (Sister Sledge), “Good Times”, his Daft Punk hit “Get Lucky” and “Let’s Dance” (David Bowie). In the intimate Tiny Desk format, the band — Nile Rodgers on guitar, the rhythm section of Jerry Barnes (bass) and Ralph Rolle (drums), keyboardists Richard Hilton and Russell Graham, horns and singers Kimberly Davis and Audrey Martells — turns the small office into a dancefloor. This live recording captures Rodgers’ legendary “funkocity” and the precision of his rhythm playing. An essential live filmed concert for lovers of funk, disco and groove.
