CHAI — Live on KEXP, 2024

Live performance by Japanese quartet CHAI, recorded in 2024 for American radio station KEXP in Seattle as part of its celebrated Full Performance series. Formed in Nagoya, CHAI built a reputation on their self-coined “neo-kawaii” aesthetic, blending J-pop, punk, funk and art-pop, driven by sisters Mana and Kana alongside Yuuki and Yuna. This filmed live concert runs through several songs in the dry, up-close sound typical of KEXP sessions: square drumming, round bass, wiry guitars and playful vocal harmonies. The band’s stage energy, synchronised choreography and sense of colourful pop are all captured here in detail. The performance carries added weight because CHAI announced their break-up in 2024, making these live captures one of the last testimonies of the group in its original line-up. A valuable document for anyone following the Japanese indie scene and 2020s alternative pop — essential viewing as a full live set.
